Billy Horschel finished up the fall portion of  PGA Tour season with a victory at the Tour Championship and collected the FedEx Cup on the way.  Horschel collected  $1.4 million this weekend with his victory over Jim Furyk, Rory McIlroy and the remaining 26 players left in the FedEx Cup field.  Add to that the $1.4 million he won last week at the BMW and don’t forget the big prize of the $10 million for winning the year long FedEx Cup competition.  Not too many people outside of Rory McIlroy could make a claim for their season being that successful.  Horschel played the month of September without shooting a round above 69!  The key to winning on tour is to stay away from the big numbers on your scorecard, well Horschel did that by only making five bogeys all week in the biggest tournament of his year.  Add to that the 16 birdies and 51 pars make for a championship scorecard for Horschel.  The Horschel family will be growing sometime soon as he and his wife are expecting a child.  Things are pretty good right now for that Florida Gator with only bigger mountains to climb in the future.

I really enjoy the FedEx Cup this year, but you can see the schedule of the events taking its toll on the players.  Four grueling weeks of golf and the Ryder Cup just in the distance.  I know both teams at the Ryder Cup will never say they are worn out with what is at stake next week.  Looking at the last few weeks of players withdrawing and skipping events and Ryder Cup team members logging miles across the U.S. chasing the FedEx Cup, there has to be a letdown somewhere.  We are all human.  Although if you listen to some of the interviews about the Ryder Cup the players all get a renewed sense of pride as they get their team bags and clothes for the event.  Throw in the emotion of the event and the crowds at Gleneagles, that will be enough to get the players pumped up for more great golf.  This event is always the best thing on television.  I can’t wait for the first match to go out on September 26th.
