Horschel Wins This Time in New Orleans

Billy Horschel proved his toughness Sunday in his win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.  Horschel had to wait on playing his last hole through a weather delay and having D.A. Points match him shot for shot.  The 27 foot birdie putt that Horschel holed on the 18th was enough to give him his first PGA Tour win, a two year exemption, and over $1.1 million.  It is kind of ironic that one of Horschels missed cuts from 2012 was here at the TPC Louisiana.

The Sunday round that lead to the championship produced nine birdies and one bogey.  Six of those birdies came in a row between Holes #7 and 12. Sunday scoring had not been one of Billy’s strengths as he didn’t even rank in the top 100 for producing good golf on the last day of an event and DA Points had clipped him in Houston earlier this year for the win.   Looking at Horschel’s other  stats the one that sticks out and that was talked about on the telecast is his Greens in Regulations number is over 90%.  If you or me could hit 90% of our greens in regulations golf would be so much more fun to play.  That stat is amazing!  Pair that with his Driving Accuracy number being only 42% of fairways hit, that tells us his iron game is sharp to hit greens from most anywhere on the hole.

Horshel has the game to compete and win at this level and be on Ryder/ Presidents Cup teams.  At 19 he played in the 2006 US Open.  At 20 he played on the winning Walker Cup Team at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland and oh by the way had a 2-1 record against Rory McIlroy beating him in singles.  This Florida Gator has some bite and plenty of game.
