Stadler Uses the Home Course Advantage

Kevin Stadler collected his first PGA Tour victory this weekend at the TPC Scottsdale course.  The Phoenix Open saw record crowds all week and the over 60,000 fans rooted Sunday for a hometown guy to collect his ticket to The Masters and all the other perks of winning on tour, like $1.1 million and entrance into all the WGC events.  Stadler posted four rounds at 68 or better to best  the leader starting the weekend Bubba Watson.   The wildcard on the weekend was from the north.  Canadian Graham Delaet  made 12 birdies and an eagle this weekend to shoot a pair of 65’s and missed a playoff by a shot.  Keep an eye out for “The Beard” who had been playing really solid with top 10’s in his last five events.

Bubba Watson gets a “what are you doing?” on the final hole of the day.  On the par 4 18th hole Watson hits driver on a hole that is only about 440 yards.  His tee shots lands in a spot where his odds of hitting the green are low.  Watson hits wedge over the green then hits a bump and run to about five to six feet and missed the putt to get into a playoff.  Now I know you can’t change Bubba, he loves the crowd, heck he was throwing visors into the crowd on hole #16.  Is it in his DNA to hit an iron off the tee then a lofted iron into the green.  He can hit that green with an 8 or 9 iron.  Driver just gets him in trouble and it did.

Hats off to the champion Kevin Stadler though.  He won the event and will be a part of the first Father/ Son combo at The Masters this spring.  After 239 starts I would say he deserves to raise a winner’s trophy.
